Ohio universities and suicide

Too many college students are considering suicide, and too few are talking about it. With this report, we hope to change that.

Although suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students, few are comfortable talking about it. This project, a collaboration of journalists, designers and programmers, aims to shatter the stigma surrounding mental illness and get people talking about suicide as a public health issue.

Out of Darkness: Touched by Suicide

Families and friends gathered for the first annual Kent State suicide prevention walk, Out of the Darkness, on April 13, 2013. Some walked in honor and remembrance of loved ones. Others walked in support and to raise awareness.

We asked them to share their thoughts on a large piece of paper taped to the wall. One by one, people picked up markers and left memorials and messages of advice and strength on the paper, which resulted in the time-lapse video at left.
